Read Exodus 32:9-10, 12b-14, and 32.
This is a rare passage that shows us explicitly an example in which God is planning to do something, hears a plea to the contrary, and changes the course of action and does something different than His original plan. Understandably, we spend a lot of our prayer time, asking for discernment to help us to know God’s plan and God’s will. This is entirely appropriate, because we desire to be willing participants in implementing God’s plan.
This passage tells us that God listens to our prayers. It also tells us that God is willing to change God’s plans as a result of our faith and our offering alternatives to God. We should notice in this passage that Moses is not whining and complaining about the punishment God plans to impose on Aaron and the Israelites, as in many ways, they deserved it. Rather, Moses reminds God of the long journey God has had with the Israelites, starting with Abraham and now bringing them out of slavery in Egypt. God listened to Moses then, and God listens today to our prayers.
Personal Worship Option:
Pray today that you can know God’s will and the plans God has for you. But do not be afraid to ask God to change the way things seem to be moving. Who knows, God may hear you and decide to change what God was planning to do.
