Read Exodus 34:5-8.

We see in this Exodus passage, God proclaims his name, and he reveals what he’s like. Here’s how God describes himself: The LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to zillions, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished. God can see through us. But as we see here, God wants to see us through. He is gracious and compassionate.

God knows we’re weak, and delights in helping us. He is slow to anger. He doesn’t write us off based on our worst moments. He is abounding in love and faithfulness. God gladly forgives us, yet there are consequences. He will make sure that justice will be done. Perhaps you noticed a tension in this description of God. How can God forgive wickedness without leaving the guilty unpunished? How can God ensure that justice is done, and yet be slow to anger? We see the answer later in the Bible. God sends Jesus to be punished for our sin and guilt. God loves us that much.

Personal Worship Option:

Dear God, thank you so much for loving us in spite of our mistakes and disobedience. Help us to follow your guidance. Also help us to make time to pray and listen for your direction. We want to be your hands and feet here on earth and give you the glory. Amen.
