Read Hebrews 13:5.

Are you always content? Are you happy with where you are in life and with what you have? Are you really………content? One of the perpetual quandaries that we human beings wrestle with is the issue of contentment. It was the reason that Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, and it is an issue in our lives and culture as well. “The grass is always greener on the other side,” is an old but very apt saying for our time. If only I had a little more wisdom, or a better family, or a more understanding spouse, or more money, or more power, etc. It’s easy to rationalize our discontent, “why can’t I have what they have?” Or why don’t people give me the respect that I am due?”

Some of the most moving passages in the Bible have been written by persons dealing with the conflict over finding contentment. The Psalms and Ecclesiastes are two examples - and both remind us that we can constantly seek after the “new and shiny thing” and as a result miss what God is trying to share with us. Jesus stresses this as well - that in our constant pursuit of contentment we lose our own souls. As the writer of Hebrews reminds us, God says “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Sometimes what we are looking for is already here - if we but have eyes to see.

Personal Worship Option:

Lord, help me to slow down and find my contentment in your presence. Amen.
