Read Matthew 28:18-20.
This passage contains Jesus’ last words to the apostles, and we understand this to be the “great commission,” our Lord’s assignment to us as the church and as his disciples. When Jesus told us to be witnesses to all the world, he was being extremely inclusive. That means being a witness in our own homes, in our community, in our nation, and in other parts of the world. Sometimes we waste valuable time debating whether our work should be local or international, when the answer is “yes,” as it is to be both local and worldwide.
I have been fortunate to serve on short-term mission trips to Cuba, to South Sudan, and to Uganda. Our work was primarily teaching, but there was also the opportunity to do construction, to equip a woodworking school, and to witness. In a small village in Cuba, local people stopped on the street to watch as we dug, shoveled, and sweated. “Why would Americans come here to do this?” The best answer we could give was a simple witness… “Because we follow Jesus Christ.”
Personal Worship Option:
Where are you called to serve Christ and to be his witness? Pray about that today and listen as God speaks to you. It may be next door or downtown or in another country. But each of us is called to serve and to witness for Christ. Listen, hear, and be blessed!
