Read Matthew 14:25-31.

Walking on water is not natural. In fact, according to the law of buoyancy, it is not even possible! Peter was action-oriented, and somewhat impulsive. So when he saw his Lord walking along on the top of the water, he was eager to give it a try. When Peter climbed out of the boat, focused on Christ, he was actually able to do this seemingly impossible feat. But as the wind blew the water around him, he became afraid, lost his focus on Jesus, and began to sink.

The real point of this story has little to do with buoyancy or even about walking on water. We face all kinds of difficulties in life, and we can face them and get through them if we keep our focus on Christ. Sometimes we have a tendency to lose our focus long before the crisis hits. We grow apathetic, neglecting our holy habits of reading Scripture, praying, attending worship, and serving others. Often this loss of focus happens when things are going well, and we are deceived into thinking we can make it on our own. Peter would tell us to stay focused both in the calm water and when the wind is whipping up the waves, and we will be just fine.

Personal Worship Option:
Are you in calm waters now? Stay focused on Christ and be thankful. Or are the waves whipping around you right now? Stay focused on Christ, who knows of our storms and who will lead us through them.
