Read Luke 5:1-11.
Jesus was at the shore of Galilee where a great crowd had gathered around him. He asks Peter to put out a little distance from the land so he could preach to the crowd. When he was finished speaking, he asked Peter to go out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. As usual Peter and his crew had worked all night and caught nothing. I don’t know how they made a living. It seems that every time we see them fishing, they have caught nothing. When Peter cast the net into the sea he caught a large quantity of fish. The nets were so full they began to tear. This miracle humbled Peter. Jesus uses this great fishing story as a metaphor for Peter’s calling. “Peter, from now on you will be catching people instead of fish.” Peter did not hesitate when Jesus called him. He left everything and began to follow Jesus. Are we following Jesus? Are we casting the net of the Gospel?
