Devotion:
Read John 6:32-35.
Food is one of the essential elements of life. We often use the word “bread” to refer to food in general. When we say, “Let’s get together and break bread,” we don’t literally mean enjoying a meal of bread alone but rather, we refer to the entire meal as “bread.” The reason for this is that, in most cultures including ours, bread is a key part of every meal. Growing up in the south, we had homemade biscuits most mornings for breakfast and usually had cornbread at lunch and dinner. On Sundays, we almost always enjoyed homemade dinner rolls. It was a very rare meal in our home that did not include bread, and my mother considered it wimping out when the bread was sliced store-bought bread.
Jesus had just provided physical food for 5,000 men plus women and children, and the people clamored around him, eager to be fed again. When Jesus told them that he was the bread of life, he was saying to them and to us that he offers real sustenance, food that feeds us spiritually and completely. When we learn to fully accept Christ, we are filled and have no need for other spiritual food.
Personal Worship Option:
Give thanks today for daily bread, the food that nourishes us physically. Then give thanks for the teachings of Jesus Christ that fill us completely so that we do not need to find other sources of spiritual food. Pray for the perseverance to stay close to Christ through the church.
