Devotion:
Read Romans 5:6-8.
These verses tell who we are and who God is. First, we see that we are powerless. The Greek translation for powerless is “weak, without strength.” If you’ve been really ill, you probably couldn’t care for yourself. A powerless life is frustrating, humiliating, and disappointing. The next description of us is ungodly or in the Greek, asebes. One of its root meanings is a complete failure to show respect. Imagine an unruly child running wild, out of control, in a fine art gallery. The third description of us is sinners. The root meaning is to miss the mark. Missing the mark means we choose to sin and put aside God’s plan for our lives. So Paul says we are weak, without respect for God, and missing the mark. We are in need of grace and redemption. There is good news! At just the right time, God sent his son to die for us. God loves us so much that through his grace he sent Jesus to sacrifice his life so that we could be redeemed from our sin and have eternal life. That is amazing love!
Personal Worship Option:
Meditate on the chorus to the Chris Tomlin song, “Amazing Love.”
Amazing love,
How can it be?
That You, my King, would die for me?
Amazing love,
I know it's true.
It's my joy to honour You,
In all I do, I honour You.
