Devotion:
Read Jeremiah 31:31-34.
You have heard or seen the question in various settings: “Do you want the good news or the bad news first?” The prophet Jeremiah got to share both during his years of serving God. He first had to announce doom and gloom that was coming because of the disobedience of the people. They would be defeated and carried into exile. But then he got to announce the good news. God was not finished with them yet. These verses tell of a new covenant that God will establish with the people, in which God will offer a personal relationship with everyone. In the Old Testament days, most of the people knew God only through the king or a prophet or other representative of God. But this new covenant would offer the opportunity for each person to know God.
It’s one thing to know about God. It’s one thing to read about God, hear about God, have some beliefs about God. It is another thing entirely to know God, to have a personal relationship with the God who gave you life. Be assured of God’s desire to have that relationship with you. Know that God longs to guide you in all of your life and to deepen your relationship every day. As I often say on Sunday morning, I invite you to begin or deepen that relationship and know that you will have a guide for life.
