Devotion:

Easter continues! As Christians, we are also known as “Easter people” because in that event God gave us an outlook on all of life. We believe every Sunday (every “first day of the week”) is a “little Easter.” Even more, on the Christian calendar, Easter is not just a day but a whole season that continues for seven weeks, all the way to Pentecost. So, all of the month of May is part of the Easter Season this year.

In this passage from 1 Peter, our writer reminds us of this Easter message that fuels our mission on behalf of our Lord. Because of what God did through Jesus Christ at Easter, we have been given “a living hope,” a hope that will never die. No matter what happens in this life that might cause us to feel hopeless, we have a hope that assures us God can give us new life. Because God has overcome death, we know that God can overcome anything in our life that tries to take the life out of us.

Most of all, we have a hope (not just “wishful thinking”) that assures us of being with God not only in this world, but in the world to come. This hope gives us peace and freedom to live life at its best, even in those times when we go through trials and struggles. As we continue to celebrate Easter today, be reminded of this gift of hope given to you by the God of hope, the God of Easter, the God of life!

Personal Worship Option:

Consider offering this prayer (or something similar in your own words): God of hope, thank you for this most precious gift. Help me live your hope and share your hope with others every day. Thank you for what you did at Easter so that I can live forever with Easter hope. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
