Devotion:

Through the events of Easter, God gave us all the amazing gift of grace, opening the door to a personal relationship with God and never-ending life. These verses from the letter to the Ephesians are my favorite for describing this gift. They are packed with the essence of the gospel message. It is because of God’s love that we have been given this gift. There are reminders of Easter in the phrases “made us alive with Christ” and “God raised us up with Christ.” And he emphasizes that we are “saved by grace” by stating it twice in these few verses. He also drives the point home by emphasizing that none of us have done anything to merit or earn this gift (it wouldn’t be a gift if that were the case).

Verse ten then reminds us that we were created to “do good works” because that is what God does and it is God who created us. I often say that we still seek to do good things and help others and worship God, but no longer do we do any of that to earn God’s favor or love, we do them to say, “Thank you for the gift!” Praise be to God forever and ever for the amazing gift of grace!

Personal Worship Option:

Sing (or listen to) your favorite song about grace today and offer God a prayer of gratitude for this divine gift.
