Devotion:

Read John 8:12.

Are you ever afraid of the dark? You see shadows and can’t make out what it is before you. Many people are afraid. Our grandchildren need a night light to go to sleep at night. Physical darkness is one thing, but there is also spiritual darkness. How can people who want to walk with God find their way in a dark world?

Jesus tells us the answer. “Follow me!” he said to each of his disciples. “Follow me!” is what he says to every believer. Amid the troubled world and hateful confusion and the gray gloom of guilt, Jesus is the light of the world. When we follow him and trust him, we will never walk in darkness. We might not be able to see too far ahead of us, but Jesus shows us the next step forward. That is all we should need. We can have confidence that Jesus will brighten our way and help guide us through dark times.

For us as believers, Jesus is our source of light. We do not have to be afraid of the dark. We will never have to experience darkness, because we “have the light of life.” John writes a lot about Jesus providing our light. “In him was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The darkness of evil will never overcome the light of Jesus. Hallelujah!

Personal Worship Option:

Dear God, Thank you for providing Jesus to light our way. Help us to trust each day that the light is there for us to follow. Amen.
