Read Ephesians 4:1-3

Earlier this week, we looked at some verses from the end of this chapter. These verses at the beginning of it are connected to those at the end. Our letter writer is focused on what it looks like to be a people united for the cause of Christ, as seen in the verses following these we are reading today: “There is one body and one Spirit…” So, how do you “live a life worthy of the calling you have received”? He answers that question in verse two (at least as it relates to being united as the people of Christ): “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

Whether we are thinking of people with whom we have lived in the same house or our brothers and sisters in the church, there are going to be times of friction in our relationships. It was no different in those early Church settings. So the guidance is offered to extend both patience and love to those around us. And when we do that, other people notice, and they want to be a part of that kind of church. So, do your part to help us continue to be that kind of church, then go tell others about what kind of church you are part of!

Personal Worship Option:

Pray this prayer or one in your own words. Lord of love, help me live toward others the kind of patience and love you have shown to me. Help me to always “make every effort to keep the unity of your Spirit through the bond of peace.” In Jesus’ name, Amen.
