Read Colossians 3:12-17.

When I plan wedding ceremonies with couples, they sometimes have favorite Bible passages for me to read, and sometimes they ask me to suggest some. I was surprised a few years ago when a couple immediately responded, asking that this passage be read at their wedding. Reading it at home later, I saw how beautifully it fits for two persons living together in marriage and guided by the teachings of Christ. It is now part of my list of choices of passages I suggest to couples.

When Paul wrote this passage, it was, of course, written as instruction to house churches in Colossae. But Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit; and this letter, and particularly this passage, is so very relevant to churches today. We are to show kindness, patience, and humility to one another, forgiving each other for our mistakes. Churches are made up of people with differences of all kinds, and it is easy to fall into disagreement and disunity. This passage reminds us to rise above all of that and to put love over all the recommended virtues, doing all that we do as the church in the name of our Lord Jesus.

Personal Worship Option:

Pray with me: Gracious God, help me to show the kindness, patience, and humility you desire; and let me do that through love to my sisters and brothers in the church. As we worship, serve, and grow, help us to do all that we do in the name of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
