Read Ephesians 2:8-9.

These two verses summarize what Christians believe about our salvation. Paul states this in other letters as well, because it is so very important. In some respects, this theology of grace seems counter to our way of thinking. We are taught to work and earn our way, which is a good thing in so many aspects of life. So, it is natural that we tend to bring that thinking into our theology…perhaps if I am on a church committee or give a tithe, I can be saved. The list could go on and on of the good things we can and should be doing as followers of Christ. But Paul is reminding us that we do not need to and, in fact, we cannot earn our salvation. It is given to us by grace, which is God’s love that is poured out upon us freely and without cost to us.

Our righteousness is “imputed righteousness,” meaning it was earned by Christ’s death on the cross and then credited to our account. What an awesome gift! Our role in our salvation is to accept this gift through our faith in Christ as our Lord and our Savior.

Personal Worship Option:

Precious Lord, thank you for your love we know as grace. Increase my faith and help me to serve Christ, not to be saved, but because I am saved. I pray that others will see Christ in my life and words. Amen!
