Devotion:

Read 2 Corinthians 7:4-7.

If ever there was a place that needed the Good News of Jesus Christ, it was Corinth. And if ever there was a difficult place to keep a church on the Christian path, it was at Corinth! Corinth was a seaport town, constantly filled with sailors, merchants, and those associated with sea trade. It was known for drunkenness and hard living. Christian teachings about fidelity in marriage were viewed as strange and new, going completely against their pagan culture. When religion was practiced, it was to pay homage to the gods of Greek mythology. Paul started a church in Corinth, returned several times, and wrote letters to instruct and sometimes to reprimand the church.

On one of his trips to Corinth, Paul had sent Titus ahead with a rather harsh letter to the church, calling them to repent from some of their bad practices. In this passage, we learn that Titus had returned to Paul with the good news that the church indeed was sorry and the people were eager to see him. Paul did not seek to get even with the Corinthians for all the grief and stress they have brought upon him. Instead, he felt a deep sense of joy for their faith and love of Christ.

Personal Worship Option:

Do you feel like Paul sometimes…like all your work is in vain? We cannot always be happy, because our circumstances can take away our happiness for a time. But we can have joy in our hearts, knowing that God loves us and never ever deserts us.
