Devotion:
Read John 16:33.
“The Gospel According To John” gives us a large section of teaching from Jesus as he shared some private time with his disciples the night before he died. Chapters 13-17 offer some of his deepest reflections on what it means to be his followers and live his way. In chapter 14, he assures them (and us) of a peace that he gave and will continue through the Holy Spirit.
Then, two chapters later, we find this additional assurance of peace from Jesus. However, he also acknowledges the reality of what his followers will face: “In this world you will have trouble.”
In the sermon series that we will continue in worship today, we will again acknowledge the reality of the turmoil and chaos we all deal with in various ways in our everyday lives. There are many reasons to be anxious and scared all the time! However, our Lord has promised us that we do not have to live in fear and anxiety. His light of peace shines through all that darkness. “In this world you will have trouble,” he admitted. However, he also said this: “But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Personal Worship Option:
Consider this prayer today: “Jesus Christ my Lord, thank you for the peace you give me and everyone else. Holy Spirit, thank you for your continual presence in the midst of the chaos of this world. Help me always seek you when I’m scared and anxious. And give me the wisdom and courage I need to join you in your mission by being a peacemaker. Amen.”
