Devotion:

Read Romans 12:3, 16.

This whole chapter has specific lessons on how to live as the people of God. I find it very interesting and revealing that twice it addresses the issue of not being conceited. Apparently, Paul saw that as being an issue among Christians then. And it still can be among Christians today. When we try our best to live faithfully and do the right things, it is easy to notice that others are not doing those same things and begin to “think of yourself more highly than you ought…”

Here is how Eugene Peterson translated verse three in The Message: “Living then, as every one of you does, in pure grace, it’s important that you not misinterpret yourselves as people who are bringing this goodness to God. No, God brings it all to you. The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us, not by what we are and what we do for him.” He continues in verse 16, stating it this way: “Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.”

It is obvious that Paul and other early Christians who sought to teach the way of Jesus Christ believed that a key part of living this way was to do so with a Spirit of humility.

Personal Worship Option:

How do you practice humility around people who are not Christian? And how do you practice humility with those Christians who do not seem as committed to Christ as you are?
