Devotion:
Read Philippians 2:3-8.
This is a key passage of Scripture that emphasizes humility in our relationships with others. It includes a focus on Christ as our ultimate example. Jesus was humble and he was willing to give up his rights of glory and power to obey God and serve people. Like Christ we should also have a servant’s attitude serving out of love for God and for others, not out of guilt or fear. Attitude is a choice. You choose whether you approach life with an expectation of being served or whether you look for opportunities to serve others.
It is tempting to get caught up in claiming our “rights”. I worked hard so I have the right to spend all my money on myself or thinking I deserve to indulge myself over the needs of others. This is not to say we shouldn’t care for ourselves, but it’s all in the attitude. As followers of Christ, we are to follow his example of humility. Are you willing to serve even if no recognition is given?
Personal Worship Option:
Reflect on what Jesus’ humility looked and felt like. Remember, God views service and humility as strengths. What steps in your relationships can you take to show greater humility? How can you expand your service to others?
