Devotion:

Read Romans 12:12.

One chapter; one verse; one phrase. I have shared with many of you before that chapter 12 in the book of Romans is a core passage of Scripture for me. It is a great summary of what it means to be the people of God, to live “the way of Jesus Christ.” This one verse in that chapter also contains much wisdom. And since it is the twelfth verse in the twelfth chapter, it’s easy to remember where it is. And even within this one verse, there is one phrase that may be the best advice in all the Bible for living a Christian life: “be faithful in prayer.”

So many of us are sporadic in our prayer life. We offer a short prayer at a meal every once in a while. We pray when we are aware of a need in our family or among our friends. We repeat “The Lord’s Prayer” in the worship service at church. We pray when we are facing a crisis of some kind. And then we wonder why our spiritual life is so weak.

Paul is writing to the early Christians in Rome, seeking to encourage them in their spiritual journey with God, their life of faith in Jesus Christ. His letter became one of several that the Church in many places experienced God’s guidance, so it became Scripture for all of us. And it just may be that the best advice for continuing to grow and learn how to be a Christian is found in this one phrase in this one verse in this one chapter: “be faithful in prayer.”
