Devotion:
Read Luke 14:7-11.
Becky and I went to the missions dinner at annual conference as usual several years ago. We sat at a table to ourselves near the back. A gentleman arrived a few minutes later and quietly asked if he could join us. We gladly welcomed him and introduced ourselves, and he said something like, “Good to meet you all. My name is Millard. Tell me about yourselves.” We really enjoyed our dinner conversation with him. He asked us all about our short-term mission trips and the places where we had served, showing genuine interest in us. He talked about his family and his church but said very little about his own service in mission. Later that evening, we gathered in the auditorium for the huge evening plenary. We noticed that Millard was sitting onstage with the Bishop. When the Bishop introduced him as the speaker, we learned that our dinner guest was Millard Fuller, who with his wife Linda, founded Habitat for Humanity!
In today’s passage, Jesus teaches us to think of ourselves with humility and to behave humbly. This is so countercultural that when we do it, people will notice and remember and praise God for our witness.
Personal Worship Option:
Think for a few moments about opportunities you will have today to listen to others more than talking about yourself, to be humble, and to lift up others. Pray that you will remember to do this when the time comes. Let this become a habit!
