Devotion:

Read Luke 18:1-8.

Today in our worship services we will be focusing on this parable Jesus told about this woman who was so persistent in her pleas to a judge that the judge finally granted her request. One of the keys to understanding the story is given to us by Luke, the writer of this Gospel, who shares in verse one why Jesus told the story: “...to show them (the disciples) that they should always pray and not give up.”

I don’t know about you, but I can be rather impatient sometimes. Even when I pray and make various requests of God, I have to admit that I can be somewhat expectant that God will grant my request, and soon. When we do not get the answer we want in the time frame we expect it, it can be easy to give up praying. And if we are honest enough with ourselves to admit that, maybe we can then face the reality that we have a wrong understanding of what prayer is all about in the first place. It is not about us trying to get God to do what we want done. It is about us seeking God’s will in all things. It is about us seeking a deeper relationship with God each and every day. It is about us growing in our spiritual life. It is about us having an ongoing conversation with our closest friend, our counselor, our guide, our advocate, our coach…..the One who gave us life and who knows best how to live and mature in it. And that conversation, we should never give up.

Personal Worship Option:

Take one step this week that will move you forward in your faithfulness in prayer. That could be establishing one set time each day that you will pray. And if you already have one, establish two. And if you already have two….
