Read Mark 10:13-16.
Times were becoming more intense for Jesus. Twice, he had predicted his coming death to his apostles. The Pharisees were now questioning him in an effort to test and entrap him. In this environment, parents came with their children, asking Jesus to bless them. We can imagine how Jesus’ disciples simply wanted to protect Jesus from this seemingly trivial use of his time. When the disciples tried to intercede, Jesus became “indignant,” meaning he was angry or very annoyed at what he perceived as an injustice and insisted that the children come to him, saying that the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these children.
How do children receive the kingdom and things relating to the kingdom of God? They receive them with curiosity and wonder and with trusting, unquestioning belief. They have not yet learned adult skills of critical thinking that sometimes rob us of our faith. Children learn early to say, “thank you” and to be grateful, and we are to be like that.
Personal Worship Option:
Pray with me: Gracious God, help me to have childlike faith in you. Help me to put aside the things that make me doubt and question and to simply love you as you love me. Amen.
