Read Malachi 3:8-11.

The tithe (10%) can be seen in Genesis and became part of their culture after the Exodus. It was set up to support the religious leaders, to provide for the upkeep of the temple, and to support the poor. During Malachi’s day they were trying to rebuild the temple and re-establish the sacrificial system and it took a lot of resources to accomplish this. Very few were tithing. The prophet reminds the people of their responsibility to the Temple. He also deals with social justice issues and tells them they need to take care of the widow and the orphan. He promises a blessing from God for those who obey.

The tithe is still a good concept for us today. I like what Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. We need to give cheerfully, not compulsively. We do not need to give out of guilt or because someone tried to make us feel guilty or pressure us. Giving is a matter of the heart. It is an act of worship wherein we in a tangible way express our love for God and the church.

Personal Worship Option:

Generous God, thank you for all you have given me. I realize that everything I have is a gift from you. Speak to my heart and show what you are calling me to give. Amen.
