Read Habakkuk 2:4.
I have a good friend who has often uttered the phrase, “when the rubber meets the road.” My friend was using (according to the dictionary) “a metaphorical phrase that signifies the point at which an abstract concept is put into action or tested in real life.” You may or may not have used that phrase (or a similar one), but most of us have experienced those occasions in life when times can suddenly be tough and our faith can be tested. The occasion may be illness, or sudden tragedy, or a divorce or death or any other kind of life change that catches us off guard.
So how do we respond to our faith being tested? The prophet Habakkuk responds that the righteous person will live by faithfulness. Those words have been amplified by familiar names such as Martin Luther and John Wesley, among others. And yet - we know it’s not always easy to respond to every life crisis with a calm reliance on our faithfulness. Living our life and living out our faith can sometimes be difficult. Habakkuk is encouraging us to trust God, and to live into our faith. Like every spiritual practice, it takes effort to do so. But thanks be to God, we are not in it alone.
Personal Worship Option:
Lord, thank you for helping us to live out our faith. Help us to trust in both your promise and your presence. Amen.
