Read Luke 19:35-44.
As Jesus descended the Mount of Olives and gazed upon Jerusalem, the city of God’s promise, His heart broke. Instead of celebrating His triumphal entry, He wept. He wept not for Himself, but for the people—people who longed for salvation but failed to recognize the Savior.
Jesus foresaw the devastation that awaited Jerusalem. He knew that within a generation, the city would be destroyed, its people scattered. But His grief was not only for their future suffering; it was for their spiritual blindness. The Prince of Peace stood in their midst, yet they rejected Him. They were looking for a conquering king, but Jesus came as a suffering servant.
This moment speaks deeply into our Holy Week journey. How often do we, like the people of Jerusalem, miss God’s presence because He does not come in the way we expect? How often do we long for deliverance, yet resist the very transformation God desires for us? Jesus’ tears remind us of the urgency of recognizing His presence and surrendering to His ways.
As you reflect on this passage, where in your life might God be moving in ways you haven’t recognized? Are there places in your heart where you are longing for peace but struggling to receive it in the way Jesus offers?
Jesus longs to bring true peace, but it requires trust in His way rather than our own. Are you holding on to expectations that keep you from fully embracing His presence? What step might you take today to become more open to His transforming love?
Jerusalem’s tragedy was failing to recognize “the time of God’s coming.” Could there be moments in your own life when God was near, but you were too distracted or resistant to see? How might you cultivate a heart that is more aware and receptive to God’s presence?
