Read John 2:1-11.

I cannot read this without chuckling. When Mary brings the problem of the wine having run out to Jesus, he pushes back on her. He even sounds a bit annoyed that his mother would bring this problem to him. Mary knows him well, and she knows that, even as he objects, he will save the day. She shrugs off Jesus’ protest and simply tells the servants to do whatever he tells them to do. Scholars have guessed that perhaps Mary had some responsibility for the success of the wedding feast, as evidenced by her going to Jesus for help. For the wine to run out before the days-long celebration was over would be a great embarrassment to the bride and groom and to their families.

It is as if Jesus was not yet ready to begin showing the signs of his power; but the situation was real, and the need was clear. Like so many of the miraculous signs he performed, this miracle served the needs of others, even as it pointed to his glory. We know that Jesus looked to his heavenly Father for guidance, but here we also see him following the example and teachings of his earthly servant mother.

Personal Worship Option:

Pray the words of the hymn with me, “Make me a servant, humble and meek. Lord, let me lift up those who are weak. And may the prayer of my heart always be: Make me a servant, make me a servant, make me a servant today.” Amen!
