Read Luke 1:26-38b.

God chose Mary to be the earthly mother of Jesus. When the angel first greeted her, he referred to her as “you who are highly favored.” I wonder what it was about her that prompted that description. I am guessing that one key characteristic was that she had the heart and mind of a servant. She had a deep commitment to God and lived her faith. At the end of this encounter with the angel, she simply said “I am the Lord’s servant.” I believe that is a core lesson God wanted Jesus to learn as he grew up, so he chose a woman for his mother who would teach him that with her words and her actions. In what way(s) do you live as a servant? How do you teach this lesson to others with your words and actions? Do people know that this is a core part of what it means to be a Christian by watching and listening to you? When the Holy Spirit comes to you with an assignment, will you be ready to say “I am the Lord’s servant”?
