Read Luke 15:11-32.

Luke includes this parable from Jesus about “a man who had two sons.” It is an example of several stories Jesus told to illustrate what his kingdom looks like and which we serve.

The younger son, like many who are immature and rebellious, wanted to be free to live as he pleased. For a time, this seemed to be a wonderful path. However, the money ran out, the friends ran out, and he was left in a pigpen. He had to hit rock bottom before he came to his senses. It often takes great sorrow and tragedy to cause people to look to the only One who can help them - Jesus. The Father stood ready to embrace the younger son. In the same way God’s love is constant, patient, and welcoming. He will search for us and give us opportunities to respond, but he will not force us to come to him.

The older brother found it difficult to receive his younger brother. He was filled with anger and bitterness. He was also lost - his sins were deep within his heart. He was lost without ever leaving home. He was miles and miles from his father’s heart.

Where do you identify in this story? Don’t let anything come between you and God or you and others. Let forgiveness, love, and acceptance permeate your life.

Personal Worship Option:

Do you need to forgive someone? Do you need to share love with someone? Seize the opportunity to experience joy and share it with someone.
