Devotion:

Read 2 Kings 23:1-3, 21-23.

2 Kings 23:3 – The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

We are so far removed from monarchy and feudal system that we don’t really understand it. But basically, a king or lord “owns” everything in his kingdom…including the subjects.

In Psalm 98, David introduces us to God in a different light. God is Ha Melek Jehovah, the King the Lord. God is to be king over our lives. He “owns” us. But he is a wonderful and loving king that never forces his sovereignty on his subjects. But when we willingly submit to him he protects, provides, cares, guides, heals, and saves us. He is God and he is king.

In 2 Kings 23, Josiah recommits to following God. In essence, the king realizes that it is God who sits on the throne and not Josiah. That is an amazing revelation.

So here I am again - recommitting my life to God. I realize that it is him who sits on the throne, and I am submitting to him. I realize that it is he that owns me, and I willingly give him my life.

I hope you will join with me. The journey is more fun when others come too.

Personal Worship Option:

Dear God, You are Ha Melek Jehovah, the King and the Lord of my life. Please forgive me for the times I have selfishly held back. Help me to give it all to you and to trust you with all my heart. I pray this in the name of Jesus, your son and my savior, Amen.
