Daily Devotion, August 6, 2023

Devotion:

Read Matthew 28:20b.

Yesterday, we looked at the first part of what Jesus said to his disciples before he ascended to heaven, according to the Gospel of Matthew. Today we focus on the last part.

In between, they (and we) are given the assignment of making disciples of people they encounter everywhere they go, even throughout the world. Too often, when followers of Jesus read this, they think this is just for certain Christians (pastors, teachers, church leaders, a few others). However, this is really an assignment for every person who claims Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. The key in grasping this assignment is to know that it is not just about preaching a sermon, teaching a class or having a gift for talking to people. It is about being intentional in how you live your life; being intentional to set an example for those around you; being intentional to lead others in a way of living that is different from the ways of this world. It is about looking for opportunities to share what being a Christian means to you, even if you don’t have a lot to say.

The last part of what Jesus says is so helpful at this point. As we go about our daily life, trying to figure out how to influence and guide those around us in the way of Christ, we can have confidence that we are not alone in this mission. He promised his first disciples and he still promises you and me: “I am with you always…”

Personal Worship Option:

Join us this morning as we worship together, either at 9:30 or 11:15. If you are in the area of our church building, gather with us in person. (It makes a difference.) Otherwise, join us online. Let’s celebrate the God who sends us to “Go. Be. With.”
