Devotion:
Read Genesis 15:5-18.
God had previously promised to make Abram’s descendants into a great nation and that the entire land of Canaan would be theirs. To a man getting on in years and who owned no property, this was a tremendous blessing! The years passed and no children were born to him. Abram began to worry that his heir would be one of his servants instead of a son. He had left his homeland and had gone to the place God directed him, so he had done his part of the covenant. Now, he must have been wondering whether God would be faithful in giving him offspring who would inherit the land.
Today’s passage tells us about God appearing to Abram and renewing the covenant with him. Not only will Abram have offspring, they will be as numerous as the stars in the sky, and the land they will inherit will be vast. This reminds us that God is always faithful. We may forget our baptismal vows, and the zeal we felt when we accepted Christ as our Savior may fade. It is good to reflect on those vows occasionally and to renew them through a recommitment to God. If we grow apart from God, we can find God where we left Him, always ready to receive us back with grace and forgiveness.
Personal Worship Option:
When we professed our faith in Christ, we promised to renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, to accept the help God gives us to resist evil, and to claim Christ as our Savior and serve him as Lord. How are you doing on those promises? I invite you to renew your commitment to them today.
