Read John 4:27.

This one verse says a lot about Jesus and how often he surprised those around him. He was willing to connect with those who others wouldn’t be around. Jesus was willing to cross many barriers to connect with this woman, She came alone to the well which pointed to her moral character.

Culturally, Jews and Samaritans were always at odds. Samaritan drinking vessels were considered unclean - so asking for a drink of water was unheard of. Jesus crossed the gender barrier in force among his fellow Jews. Many felt that speaking to any woman in public would be bad for the man’s reputation. Regardless of the current expectation of Jews/religious leaders at the time, Jesus was committed to reaching all people regardless of gender, race, culture, and other labels that might be applied. The disciples were surprised to find Jesus talking with the woman. That they said nothing shows their respect for and trust in Jesus.

Personal Worship Option:

What barrier could Jesus be asking you to cross to show the love of Jesus? Look for “out of the box” ways to communicate God’s love today.
