Read Psalm 139:23-24.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of repentance, reflection, and renewal. It is a time when we come before God with humility, acknowledging our sin and our deep need for His grace. The ashes we receive on our foreheads remind us of our mortality—"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:19). But they also remind us of the hope we have in Christ, who leads us in the way everlasting.

David’s prayer in Psalm 139 is the perfect posture for Ash Wednesday. He invites God to search his heart, to reveal anything within him that is offensive, and to lead him in the right path. This is not a casual request—it is an act of surrender. He is asking God to expose the hidden corners of his soul, to uncover even the sins he may not yet recognize, and to transform him.

On this sacred day, we, too, are called to lay our hearts bare before God. As we begin this Lenten journey, let us pray as David did. Let us ask God to search us, to bring to light the ways we have turned from Him, and to purify us. This is not meant to bring shame, but to bring us closer to Him, to experience the fullness of His mercy and the renewal of His love.

May this season be one of repentance, but also of grace—knowing that the God who searches our hearts is the same God who redeems and restores.

Personal Worship Option:

As you reflect today, take a moment to pray: Lord, search my heart. Reveal anything in me that keeps me from You. Forgive me, cleanse me, and lead me in Your way. May this Lent be a time of renewal, where I turn from sin and draw closer to Your presence. Amen.
