Read Jonah 3:1-10.
It seemed to Jonah that the people of Nineveh were so evil that they were beyond saving. When God commanded him to go and preach to them, he ran in the other direction. We all know the story of Jonah being swallowed up by a huge fish (whale?) which finally vomited him out on dry land. Jonah had learned his lesson, and when God commanded him a second time to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, he went and preached.
Jonah walked across the huge city, preaching that God would destroy the city unless they repented and turned to God. It was as if Jonah was preaching what he thought was a futile message to a people who would never listen, much less repent. Jonah was just going through the motions, secretly hoping the Ninevites would not repent. But amazingly, repent they did! They declared a fast in the land and put on sackcloth and ashes. When God saw this, God relented and did not bring destruction on the people. God has a way of using the most unlikely people to accomplish God’s plans!
