Devotion:

Read 1 Corinthians 13.

The 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians is one of the most quoted and read scriptures in the Bible. Think back about how many weddings you have been to where this is read. It says that if you do not have love, you have nothing. It goes on to tell the characteristics of love such as being patient and kind. When I hear these at a wedding, I always think that the couple getting married is hoping that will be the case with their love for each other.

The case that love trumps hope and faith is not really made clear by Paul. It may be that love describes the very heart of God. In various other places in the Bible it says that God is love.

Love is God’s nature. We as followers of Christ, when we become a Christian, not only receive God’s love, but hopefully demonstrate His love characteristic. In a previous chapter of Romans (5) Paul wrote that God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, which has been given to us. We are never more like God than when we are loving one of God’s creatures. Love is the greatest of all of the virtues.

Personal Worship Option:

Spirit of God, fill us with your love so that we can share it with the people around us. Give us the love that binds all of the traits and virtues. Make each of us a partner in building your kingdom here on earth. Amen.
