Devotion:
Read Matthew 28:16-20.
Back at the beginning of this Gospel account, Jesus told his first disciples he would teach them to fish for people. He then spent around three years teaching them to do just that. He taught them through stories and lessons. He challenged their thinking. He taught them in everyday life situations, by how he treated people. He taught them to cross “lines” that had been barriers between people. He expanded their understanding of God. He showed them how to reach out to and connect with the least, the last, the lost and the lonely. Finally, he showed them the ultimate act of service, sacrifice and love.
After he was resurrected from the dead, he met with them and commissioned them to go and put into practice the lessons they had learned. In some sense, they had “graduated”, though they would continue to learn more for the rest of their lives. For me, “fishing for people” and “making disciples” are two ways of saying the same thing. Everyone who follows Jesus is invited to learn those lessons and then sent to put them into practice. How are you doing with your “fishing”?
Personal Worship Option:
Here’s two verses of how Leon Adkins wrote about this Bible passage:
“Go, make of all disciples.” We hear the call, O Lord, that comes from thee, our Father, in thy eternal Word. Inspire our ways of learning through earnest, fervent prayer, and let our daily living reveal thee everywhere.
“Go, make of all disciples.” We at thy feet would stay until each life’s vocation accents thy holy way. We cultivate the nature God plants in every heart, revealing in our witness the master teacher’s art.
