Devotion:

Read Ephesians 4:11-16.

These verses are sometimes used as an excuse by people who feel they are called to speak the truth to someone and yet they fail miserably to do it with love. Instead, their mean, harsh way of talking to others hurts feelings and leaves deep wounds in their relationships. Sometimes people almost delight in calling people out, not doing it in a loving accountable way. Paul isn’t endorsing this method of action. He’s encouraging Christians to speak truthfully and lovingly, without intimidation or manipulation.

Sometimes speaking the truth in love involves confrontation and challenge when correction is needed. Many times uncomfortable words have to be spoken, but it is all in the way that they are said. If no one addresses an obvious problem, it will remain hanging and can become the elephant in the room. We should always pray and ask for God’s guidance on how to handle hard discussions. These verses also talk about the importance of us growing in our maturity with God. God desires for us to have wisdom that he makes available for us through the teachings of Jesus. Let’s grow in knowledge and love through God.

Personal Worship Option:

Lord, we know how necessary love and sensitivity are when confronting others. Help us be loving, humble, and truthful to all of those around us. Amen.
