Devotion:
Read John 20:19-23.
When a class of apprentice linemen and electricians completed their four years of training, I enjoyed getting them together for a good lunch and to present their certificates. This “graduation” marked the end of their classroom instruction and intensive on-the-job training. By this time, they would have worked on every type of transmission construction project we did, would have worked for several different foremen, and were fully equipped to be journeymen. They took great pride in finally being journeymen, able to work with little oversight and equipped to train new apprentices. They would never stop learning, but now they were ready to take on full responsibility in their craft.
We are much like that in our life of faith. In our passage for today, Jesus had taught and trained the apostles, showing them how to do every act of love and care that he had done. Now it was their turn. You and I will never stop learning and growing in our faith, but we have “graduated,” and it is our turn. As followers of Christ, we must be prepared and ready to serve and to lead others to Christ.
Personal Worship Option:
Please pray with me: Almighty God, please guide me and give me wisdom as I serve you. Just as Christ sent the Holy Spirit to empower the apostles, send your Spirit into me each day. And even as I learn, help me to serve as a mature follower of your Son. In his name, Amen.
