Devotion:
Read John 14:22-26.
Have you ever experienced learning something new and complex, and then having the teacher leave you to apply your new learning? I remember in college chemistry lab sessions how the professor would explain the tests we were to run in order to analyze our samples of unknown substances. The professor would then leave the lab, and we would look at our lab partner and go to work. Invariably, something did not happen as expected in the analysis, and we would search the lab manual without finding the needed guidance. Then our graduate assistant lab instructor would calmly come to the rescue, fill in the gap in our knowledge, and we would finally finish with the answer.
While this is not a perfect illustration, it helps me see how Jesus taught and left the room. Many of his teachings are recorded in the gospels and expounded upon in other New Testament writings. But the Holy Spirit is here with us now, ready to speak to us and fill in the gaps for us. God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all God, and we can trust the Holy Spirit to teach us as we strive to learn the way of Christ.
Personal Worship Option:
Give thanks today for God’s Holy Spirit, present and active in the world and in our lives. Open your heart and mind to learn from the Holy Spirit and pray that the Spirit will continue to teach you in the way of Christ.
