Devotion:

Read Proverbs 4:26-27.

In soccer (some say “the real football”), you can only use your feet and your head to advance the ball. The Bible also encourages us to use our feet and head to advance the way of Christ. The first sentence in these verses emphasizes this issue. Whatever we are allowing to influence our mind is going to guide where we go and how we live our life. So it is vital to be intentional about what you are reading, what you are watching, who you are listening to and who you allow to influence your thinking.

When I read verse 27, I cannot help but think about how too many Christians have allowed the political world to influence how they will think and how they will relate to other people. Too many have come to believe that they should either be on the right (conservative) or left (liberal) and should see those on the other side as the enemy, evil people who must be avoided. For me, verse 27 has some good advice: “Do not turn to the right or the left…” but understand that both ways of thinking have good contributions to make to what it means to be the people of Christ.

Personal Worship Option:

Look for opportunities to engage in conversation with someone on the other side of the political and theological “aisle” with the goal of better understanding their point of view.
