Devotion:

Read Psalm 19.

Psalm 19 tells us to slow down and take a look at the world. Take a walk on a woodland trail or gaze into a night sky bejeweled with stars. Listen to the melodies of the birds. In these moments your heart gains a renewed sense by which you perceive the world. You discover God’s glory. The world becomes a view that gives you a peek into God’s majesty.

There is nothing like this glory. In the ancient world, the sun was considered by many to display the greatest glory and to be the greatest of God’s creation. But in Psalm 19, the sun is only one wonder of God’s creation. It is a pale reflection of God’s overall brilliance and greatness. God made all things. So, naturally, when we look at the world around us, we learn about its Maker. We discover the Creator’s sheer delight in beauty, his wisdom in ordering all things right, his marvelous power that inspires our awe. We sometimes do not see these things because we fail to look at the world through the lens of faith. But when we do, we see glory all around.

Personal Worship Option:

Lord, we look, and yet we do not see. Open the eyes of our heart to see your signature written across creation. Help us to stand in awe of your glory and wisdom. Remind us of the words of the hymn How Great Thou Art: “O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the work thy hand hath made.” Let the 14th verse of this Psalm be our prayer - “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Amen.
