Devotion:

God had blessed Abram to be a blessing to all people. Through Abram and his descendants, God was to become known to all people. We see little evidence of this blessing of others through Abram’s son Isaac or his grandson Jacob. But now, through his great-grandson Joseph, other people are being blessed and are learning about God. The ancient Egyptians worshiped as many as 2,000 gods but had never heard of God. Joseph changed that! When Pharaoh sent for Joseph saying he had heard that Joseph could interpret any dream he heard, Joseph quickly corrected him. Joseph made it clear that it was not he who interpreted dreams but God through him. In today’s passage, we see that Pharaoh believes and is crediting God with Joseph’s wisdom as he appoints him to lead Egypt through the famine.

Joseph teaches us much about witnessing. We all have gifts; and when we are complimented for using them well or are asked why we do a good thing, we have a unique opportunity to give God the credit. When we point to God in those situations, God becomes real and relevant to the person with whom we share.

Personal Worship Option:

Pray for the opportunity today to tell someone about God. When you are complimented for doing the right thing, step back and give God the credit. Remember that we are not to put our light under a basket but to let it shine so others will see God at work in us.
