Devotion:
Read Mark 9:2-9.
Mountains often had a significant role in God’s dealings with His people. The expression “mountain-top experience” originated from the Bible because of the many times that God met His people on various “mountain-tops”. This phrase has come to mean a moment of understanding, or an experience of significant revelation given by God.
Peter was so mesmerized with this spiritually high moment that he wanted to stay there. We can relate to Peter’s desire. Those mountain-top experiences with God can be so sweet and inspiring that we don’t want it to end. But while those moments are good for us, this passage also reminds us of our responsibility to come down off of that mountain and engage the crowds. God gives us those mountain-top experiences in order to sustain us in the valley. His revelation is always intended to help us journey with Him more closely on the road ahead.
Personal Worship Option:
Reflect on a previous mountain-top experience. What was God saying to you? How has that experience sustained and encouraged you? Rejoice and give thanks to God for his ever-present work in your life.
