Devotion:

This week we are focusing in on our need to balance our life with both work and rest. The emphasis on rest comes out of the connection to the Sabbath, a major piece of the commandments and covenant God offered. This passage for today comes out of what Bible scholars refer to as “Second Isaiah,” the portion of that prophetic book beginning at chapter 40 that appears to have been written after the exile had taken place. Because of that event, several new understandings developed among the people of Israel about this God they worshipped. This text lifts up God’s connection to and welcome of outsiders. Anyone who follows God’s ways and obeys God’s commandments are understood to be God’s people. The opening lines sum up God’s primary interest in our relationships with each other: “Maintain justice and do what is right…” Anyone who does this is “Blessed…”

Added to that is a focus on keeping the Sabbath. It is mentioned three times in these few verses, lifting up God’s desire that we honor it as a part of the rhythm of our life. Verse 8 reminds us that God is ever seeking to gather other people in the kingdom and invites us who claim God’s name to serve that same mission. One of the ways we do that is to set an example for others by balancing our life with both work and rest, honoring the Sabbath commandment of God.

Personal Worship Option:

Do you know anyone who needs to learn how to rest and relax? How might you invite them to join you in a time of resting and let them know of God’s desire for this?
