Devotion:

Jesus was always turning the thinking and ways of this world upside down. He constantly taught the disciples to change their way of thinking about what is most important in life. They didn’t think children were important and tried to keep them away from Jesus, but he said they were key to understanding his kingdom and should be welcomed and loved. They thought enemies were to be defeated and destroyed, but he said they were to be loved. They thought Samaritans were to be avoided, but he said they were to be welcomed. They thought God was distant, but he taught that God is close and personal.

The disciples also bought into the worldly understanding of what it means to get ahead or to be considered great. This passage tells us of the time they were arguing with each other about who was the greatest among them. (This is rather late in the story and I can’t help but wonder if Jesus isn’t shaking his head, or smacking his forehead as he listens to their childish spat. Surely they had learned more than this by now!) Jesus once again reminds them that they are not to be like everyone else. His followers are to relate to each other differently than most people do. Their focus is to be on others, not themselves.

By our service to others in his name, do other people recognize that we belong to Christ?

Personal Worship Option:

In what ways are you intentional about serving the needs of others in the name of Jesus Christ?
