Devotion:
Read Philippians 2:5-11.
Humility is a hard concept to learn and obtain. It’s not something that comes easily to us. It is, in fact, a lifelong spiritual practice that we really have to work on. We are driven by a hundred different factors to lift ourselves above those around us including our desire to stand out, get the best grades, climb the corporate ladder to the top, live out our entitlement, and even obsess on our need for self-worth. It goes against our grain to accept that we are no better or worse than any other human being. Yet humility can be liberating. It opens us to recognizing our true purpose, allows us to love and be loved.
We can’t possibly understand or hope to reach the kind of humility Jesus demonstrated by becoming one of us, by living a life of service, and by dying for all of us. This is all because he (and he was God) loved us so completely that he was willing to sacrifice himself for us. His level of humility isn’t attainable for us. Yet this is the example, and God calls us to strive for what humility is possible. Developing humility requires honesty, willingness, self-examination, and living in service to others. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it can be a beautiful journey.
Personal Worship Option:
Jesus, it was for me and my sins that you humbled yourself to the point of death on a cross. You took my place and redeemed me. Help me live in humble adoration and sing your praises. Amen.
