Read 1 Corinthians 12:1-7.
Yesterday, we looked at a couple of ways the Bible states the mission God has given us as the people of Christ. God seeks to bless everybody. God wants every person to experience life at its best. Our passage today from this letter to the Corinthians reminds us that the Holy Spirit has gifted people in various ways in the Church in order to accomplish that mission. My focus is on verse 7: “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” The reason the Spirit distributes these gifts is not just for the good of the individual person. It is so that person can do their part for the good of everybody.
This lesson is another opportunity for the Church to shine a light into the culture around us. In so many ways, we have lost a sense of working together to benefit everybody; not just a selected few. Even in team sports, there is often too much focus on individual players. May it be that each of us as followers of Christ will constantly be seeking to do our part in the life of the Church “for the common good.”
