Read Numbers 14:11-24.

When the ten spies gave their scary report about the land of Canaan, the people of Israel cried out and wept. They didn’t want to go into Canaan. They stopped trusting in God’s promises and didn’t believe that he would help them fight against the giants. God had promised to give them the land, but they didn’t believe it anymore.

Because of their unbelief, the Lord punished them. They were not allowed to enter the Promised Land but had to go back to the wilderness for another forty years. This is a warning for us. If we don’t trust God’s promises and don’t have faith in Him, there will be consequences.

Moses begged the Lord not to destroy the people, but to be merciful to them. He asked the Lord to forgive their sins. God listened to Moses, and he did forgive them, but they died in the wilderness. However, the nation of Israel would not be destroyed. In forty years’ time, the people who were left would be able to enter the Promised Land. We know that God forgives our sins as well. If we confess our sins, God hears our prayers and forgives us out of His love. Remember that harmful consequences can result so we should try to obey God at all times, knowing that we will make mistakes.

Personal Worship Option:

Dear God, help us to have the strength to obey you and trust you. Keep reminding us that you hear our prayers and that you have the master plan if we will let you guide us. Amen.
