Devotion:
Read Luke 23:44-56.
As Luke writes about the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, he reminds us that it seemed like all of creation was lamenting this moment: “darkness came over the whole land….the sun stopped shining.” Then there is the statement about the curtain in the temple. That curtain had kept people from having an understanding that they could be close to God. Only the priest could be close to God. But Jesus came to restore our relationship with God, to let every person know that God knew their name and loved them as a parent knows and loves their children. At that point, Jesus faithfully offers his spirit back to God.
The note about the Jewish leader named Joseph, who cared for Jesus’ body and placed it in the tomb, reminds me that the majority does not always make the right decision. They are not always following God’s will. Joseph “had not consented to (the) decision and action” of the Council who condemned Jesus to death.
The day between when Jesus was crucified and the day he rose from the dead was the Sabbath. It is the day of rest. Jesus would sleep the sleep of death. But he would rise again.
To rest from our work is to trust in God. It is to acknowledge that we are not in charge of the world or any part of it. God is in charge. So, trust. Rest. Wait. God will give you new opportunities again.
Personal Worship Option:
As you are nearing the end of your journey toward Easter, pray about what “new life” opportunities God may be preparing for you.
